- LEARN MORE ABOUT HOW YOUR PRESCRIPTION MEDICATIONS AFFECT YOUR SLEEP. Check out this useful patient handout offered by ADVANCE Healthcare Network: "Prescription Medications & Sleep: Why some commonly prescribed medicines may be keeping you up at night."
- SAFE SLEEP DAY IS DECEMBER 5 IN NEW
ZEALAND: The country's national Maori
SUDI (Sudden Unexpected Death of an Infant) prevention organisation,
Whakawhetu, is sponsoring this special awareness day to promote safe sleep
practices for babies. Maori rates of SUDI continue to be much higher
than other groups, making up more than 60% of New Zealand’s SUDI deaths
every year.
Two special events are slated to kick off this campaign. One is a national Weave-Off with weavers stationed at Te Wananga o Aotearoa (TWoA) sites around the country to weave as many Wahakura (flax sleeping pods) as possible.
The other is the seminar, "Protecting our Mokopuna" at Manukau, in which community workers and whanau can learn more about Maori SUDI; the keynote speakers are SUDI experts Dr David Tipene-Leach, Dr Adrian Trenholme and Professor Ed Mitchell, the the opening presentation by Green Party MP Marama Davidson. - MONROE, LA RESIDENTS: Free Community Lecture on OSA: Dr. Matthew Abraham, medical director and board certified sleep specialist, presents "‘Tis the Season to Stop Snoring" on Tues Dec 8 at 6:30 p.m. on the campus of the University of Louisianan at Monroe in Stubbs Hall (Room 100). This is an opportunity for local residents to learn about the link between snoring and obstructive sleep apnea, and how home sleep study testing can detect obstructive sleep apnea. Attendees receive a complimentary light dinner and free sleep apnea screening test. Abraham will answer questions about how the diagnosis and treatment of obstructive sleep apnea can significantly improve overall health, mood and productivity. This event is hosted by Brooks Home Sleep Studies and sponsored by Philips Respironics. Registration is required: www.brookshomesleepstudies.com. Contact Melissa Bynes-Brooks at 318.342.1442 for more information.
