SLEEPTEMBER A grassroots campaign to raise awareness and crowdsource funds for research related to sleep loss and chronic medical conditions related to sleep loss and how these impact public health and safety. While Sleeptember came into full force in September 2015, it is actually a YEAR-LONG effort to push the message that sleep research matters.
SHC will continue to post #Sleeptember tags here in our weekly news curation in October and beyond and hope you will actively share links with loved ones who can benefit from learning more about their sleep issues. To learn more about SLEEPTEMBER:

Student competition seeks to raise awareness of sleep health for teens. Middle schoolers are invited to use their research skills to learn more about how light affects sleep in a new competition co-sponsored by the National Science Teachers Association and the National Sleep Foundation. Teams of four students from grades 6 through 8 are invited to work with an adult coach or teacher to develop a project which researches the impact light has on sleep. Entries could include prototypes of inventions, awareness campaigns or research project proposals. Sponsors will provide educational materials which include two free lesson plans to illustrate light and circadian rhythm as well as offer ways to measure light. Registration is now open and won’t close until January 29, 2016 and is open only to United States or Canada citizens or legal residents. Qualified students will be enrolled in a public, private or home-school program. First prize is $5000, second is $2500 and third is $1000; teachers also receives prizes. Register FREE here
Curator's remarks: I think this is a fantastic idea and hope if you have kids in this age group you will forward this opportunity on to their middle school science teachers to see if they might want to participate.- The National Institutes of Health is sponsoring a clinical trial which will study insomnia at National Jewish Health in Denver. The purpose of this study is to understand better the efficacy of first- and second-stage therapies for insomnia among individuals who have insomnia alone or in combination with other psychiatric disorders. The study will last for 16 months and will require participants to take part in an initial screening, maintain a sleep diary, undergo a sleep study, accept 6 to 12 weeks of treatment (if qualified) and attend 4 follow-up visits with researchers. Subjects should be ages 21 or older with chronic insomnia. Compensation available. More info
- The San Francisco VA Medical Center is looking for subjects for a study trialing a new FDA-approved medication for sleep difficulties caused by PTSD. Subjects should be male or female, ages 21 or older, with symptoms of PTSD that include distressing dreams. Compensation available. More info
